Holidays May 30

Saint Joan of Arc

The patroness of all the military, Joan of Arc, by the decree of Pope Benedict in 1920 was canonized. However, many remember the heroine and admire her exploits for several centuries.

She was born in 1412 in a small French village. At the age of twelve, the first revelation appeared to Jeanne. According to the girl herself, she heard the voices of the great saints. They told her about a special mission that Jeanne had to fulfill. The voice of Archangel Michael said that she was chosen and someday she would become the savior of France. At that time, the country was not in the best position: the British occupied the land, and the French army was in extremely critical condition, which did not allow repelling the enemies.

The saints communicated with Jeanne for several years. When the girl grew up and got stronger, they began to call her for action. Having hardly moved from the occupied territory to the allies, Jeanne found Karl's dauphin and told him about the voices and the great mission. And at the age of seventeen, the girl led the army, encouraging the French people to fight the invaders. Her army, showing great courage, was able to get into the besieged Orleans and in 1429 forced the British to remove the siege of the city. For this feat, Jeanne began to be called the Virgin of Orleans. Thanks to alternating victories of d'Arc, Dauphin Carl was able to crown in 1429.

Jeanne's popularity grew, and the aristocratic elite, frightened by the wide scope of the war, contributed to the removal of the girl from command of the army. Soon, when trying to escape from the besieged Compiegne as a result of the betrayal of friends, the warrior was captured by the Burgundians, after which she was handed over to the British. The church court accused Jeanne of witchcraft and heresy and decided to burn her at the stake. The execution of the "witch" was accomplished on May 30, 1431. The remains of d'Arc were dumped in the Seine. A quarter of a century later, a new lawsuit rehabilitated Jeanne and recognized France as a favorite "daughter".

May 30 on the folk calendar

Evdokia the Whistler

On this day, the church honors the memory of St. Eudokia, and today the peasants in Russia decided to cultivate potatoes: somewhere to potato, and somewhere to populate potatoes that have not yet broken through the ground. There were also special signs on Evdokia. For example, it was believed that today is a reflection of the next three months, clear weather promised heat, and rainy weather indicated a wet and humid summer.

On May 30, they honor another saint named Andronicus - or Ondron, as he was popularly called. Andronicus, according to legend, prayed that there would be no droughts. “Ondron, open the gates of heaven and let it rain so that it spills on the grain that laid the earth in cheese,” such a phrase could often be heard from the elderly on this day. And to fix the prayer, people held a special ceremony: they went out into the field, bowed to all four cardinal directions in turn. Only men over the age of 33 years were allowed to commit such an action.

Historical events of May 30

May 30, 1808 - The inclusion of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany (while maintaining autonomy) in the French Empire

The Tuscan throne at the initiative of Napoleon was taken by his sister Eliza. Possessing intelligence and ambition, the lady masterfully coped with the role of ruler assigned to her. Quickly enough, she gained respect and love from the subjects. Eliza has done a lot for the good of her territory. During her reign, all swamps were dried up, a monopoly on tuna fishing was introduced, alum deposits were developed, the production of textile products (mainly velvet and silk) was improved, theaters, libraries, educational institutions, hospitals and dormitories were built. However, the supreme achievement of the ruler was that she was able to reanimate the declining quarries of Carrara marble, which subsequently provided all of Europe with fireplaces, clocks, altars, etc.

May 30, 1896 - During the coronation of Nicholas II on the Khodynka field in Moscow, a great crush occurred, which killed more than 1,500 people

In honor of the coronation of Nicholas, festivities were set up with free dishes, gifts, wine and other entertainment. In connection with this event an unimaginable number of people gathered on Khodynka. Everyone dreamed of receiving the promised gift - to snatch their piece of “happiness”. And although these were small presents in the form of a mug and a bright calico scarf, this did not stop the crowd. Millionth team rushed to the pavilion with gifts shouting "Give" and "Quickly disassemble, otherwise it will not be enough." It’s not hard to guess what all this led to: about 1,500 people died in an unbearable stampede and about the same number received serious injuries.

May 30, 1899 - For the first time in Germany, acetylsalicylic acid went on sale

Acetylsalicylic acid, or aspirin in a simple way, was synthesized in 1853 by an outstanding scientist Karl Gerhardt. And only after so many years the aspirin was brought to “mind”, cleaned of impurities in such a way that it could be used in therapy. Initially, the drug was sold only in Germany and strictly according to the prescription of the attending physician.

May 30, 1999 - In the underground passage of the metro station "Nemiga" (Minsk), there was a crush that killed 54 young people

On this day, about two thousand people (mostly from 14 to 20 years old) returned from a concert dedicated to the anniversary of Radio Mir. Hiding from the overwhelming rain, the crowd darted to the nearest metro station. The 100-meter underground passage, not designed for such a huge number of people, was completely clogged, and people, despite this, continued to arrive. Police officers tried to block the flow, but the crowd, heated and frightened by the hurricane, continued to push. The people in front were brutally crushed. Many lost consciousness, and were subsequently trampled. Police officers who tried to help people were also crushed.
